Gandharva Veda Music

Gandharva Veda musiciansGandharva Veda music originated in India thousands of years ago. Maharishi Gandharva Veda music is played in order to activate the body's self-healing powers, to neutralise tension, and to create a relaxed and peaceful atmosphere. The Ayurvedic system of health care has used it for thousands of years in the treatment of health disorders. According to tradition this eternal music of Nature produces its effect by bringing mind, body, and environment into harmony with the universal rhythms of Nature.

Timeless and Practical

Gandharva Veda music is the eternal music of nature - the rhythms and melodies of nature expressed in music. If you could hear the changing frequencies present at the first awakening of dawn, in the fullness of midday or in the deep silence of midnight, you would be hearing the frequencies of Gandharva Veda music. Playing this music creates a balancing and harmonising influence in the individual and the environment. The classical ayurvedic texts give precise times of the day for playing specific ragas, or melodies. The music that is right at dawn does not have the ideal effect at midday.

Maharishi Mahesh Yogi"Gandharva music is the eternal melody of Nature which is ever-lively in Transcendental Consciousness. From there it reverberates and constructs different levels of creation. Gandharva music is the basis of all order and harmony in nature; therefore it has that most harmonising, most integrating influence." - Maharishi Mahesh Yogi

Recommendations for Listening

The ragas - as the music pieces of Gandharva Veda are called - should be listened to at the prescribed times, because there is a correspondence between the sounds and rhythm of the raga and the quality of Nature at that time. In this way Maharishi Gandharva Veda music produces a beneficial and harmonising resonance in the environment and for the listener. Certain ragas may also be played at any time of day. Furthermore, each raga helps to unfold particular qualities of consciousness for example compassion or devotion.

You will derive maximum enjoyment from the melodies of Maharishi Gandharva Veda music by making yourself comfortable, sitting or lying down, with the eyes closed if you like. But even without listening yourself, you can have the music playing 24 hours a day (for example using a CD-changer), and this will produce a nourishing atmosphere in your home or at your place of work.
