Consultations with a Maharishi Ayurveda Physician
Maharishi Ayurveda begins with a Personal Health Evaluation from a qualified practitioner. This takes about 60 minutes and enables the practitioner to assess your health requirements and give you advice on a range of things you can do to improve your health and avoid future problems. This may include advice on diet, daily routine, changes in lifestyle, herbal supplements and various natural therapies, such as Panchakarma revitalisation therapy.
Pulse Diagnosis
The first thing the
Maharishi Ayurvedic physician does is take your pulse. This ancient form
of diagnosis (Nadi Vigyan) takes many years to perfect, but once mastered
provides the physician with a powerful diagnostic tool. Pulse diagnosis
allows the physician to determine your state of health and detect any
imbalances in Vata, Pitta and Kapha. The physician can detect and treat
minor imbalances before they develop into illnesses.
On the physical level, Ayurveda understands the body in terms of three basic principles or "doshas", called Vata, Pitta and Kapha, which underlie all bodily processes. Balance of the doshas promotes health and well-being. When imbalances in the doshas go uncorrected, illness results. The dominant dosha in an individual determines that person's body type, which in turn determines which diseases they are susceptible to.
After taking the pulse the physician will prescribe a health programme suited to the individual. This may include recommendations on diet, daily routine, changes in lifestyle, herbal food supplements, exercise, aromatherapy and various natural therapies, such as Panchakarma revitalisation therapy.
Maharishi Ayurveda recommends that you have a consultation 3 to 4 times a year, especially when the seasons change, so that the individual physiology can be put in tune with the cycles of nature - an important aspect of ayurveda.
